NOVA originates from the homonymous natural phenomenon – when a dormant star meets another star due their gravitational pulls, the dormant star experiences a brief re-ignition, releasing a moment of intense brightness. Similarly, NOVA, was made to initially appear as a dormant mass that momentarily lights up to display a show of lights upon interaction with passers-by. As individuals make their way through, the lights would change colours, and pulse at increased rates, exhibiting responsiveness to three levels of proximity of the visitor. With the lights immeasurably reflecting off of the parallel-running mirrors, we wanted to create the illusion of an expansive space within the seemingly narrow passageway of our chosen site in order to mimic the infiniteness of outer space.
