Part of the programming of a children’s summer camp is a collaborative art project with the Ontario Science Centre in celebrating Canada’s 150th year anniversary.
The collaboration came a result of the Inventorium exhibition in the Great Hall of the Ontario Science Centre, as part of continued support from the Canadian government in fostering innovation in science and technology as we move towards the Maker Movement in modern education. The project uses open-sourced data about Canadians to create an interactive visual display for the public while exploring “what it means to be Canadian” through the viewpoint of V4Lab camp participants. As their “big project”, V4Lab 2017 participants worked in teams to design and develop a modular tile in contributing to the overall design of the wall installation.
Using a combination of microprocessor computers (Arduino), radio frequency identification proximity sensors (RFID), and a series a RBG LEDs, different types of data that were encoded by the campers could be shown on the modular wall surface. Visitors interact with the installation by placing the tiles with the specific radio frequency identification tags that dictated which particular data set was to be display when put on the proximity sensor.
